Author and Ally Dr. Kerry Olitzky will donate proceeds from his new children's book,Waiting for El Colibrí, available in both English and Spanish!
For more than 30 years, the CIW has been fortunate to count a wide variety of exceptionally talented writers, photographers, filmmakers, and artists among our ever-growing cadre of allies. Their participation has contributed immeasurably to the extraordinary tradition of story-telling at the heart of the Fair Food movement. We feel especially grateful when these talented people choose to lend their creative energies to special projects that bring attention to and support our work, projects often inspired by the direct experience of a visit to Immokalee, a day spent marching shoulder-to-shoulder with CIW members at an action, or a visit to their own community by a farmworker community leader. Today we’re excited to share one such project with you, from author and ally Dr. Kerry Olitzky.
"A few years ago, I went to Immokalee, Florida with T'ruah. I wanted to learn more about the tomato workers and how they were treated. Out of this experience came a story I wrote called Waiting for El Colibrí (the hummingbird). It is being published by Floricanto Press, with beautiful illustrations by Jennifer Kostman.”
Here’s a synopsis of the short children's book:
“A little boy works hard in his garden to attract hummingbirds. He plants colorful flowers, paints in bright colors the garden's surroundings, and places a hummingbird feeder. More importantly, he patiently waits and hopes for the birds to discover his garden. Will he succeed in attracting the elusive and majestic hummingbirds? He also waits patiently for his father, whom they called El Colibrí, to come home from his work picking tomatoes in the fields.”
The book is available here in both English and Spanish, and Dr. Olitzky is generously donating all author proceeds to the CIW! Order now and receive a lovely book to read to children and do good in the world at the same time.
