A large fossil fuel company — NRG Energy — is attempting to build a fracked gas power plant in the heart of AOC’s district.
Their current power plant is so dirty that the state is forcing it to shut down by 2023. But the company wants to replace it with an option that will continue to pollute our community and climate just the same — instead of with a renewable energy option.
Before this proposal moves forward, the state is considering public comments this week. So for the past several months, our organizing team has been knocking on doors, making calls, and tabling throughout the district to educate our neighbors on ways they can make their voices heard against the NRG power plant.

Western Queens is already subject to high levels of air pollution from highways and the existing power plant — Astoria has long been known as “Asthma Alley.”
Not only can our climate not bear more fossil fuels, placing more sources of pollution in frontline neighborhoods that already bear the brunt of poor air quality is an environmental injustice. Your zip code shouldn’t determine your health outcomes.
This power plant would further poison our community’s air and worsen the climate crisis, but New York’s new Governor, Kathy Hochul, and the Department of Environmental Conservation have the authority to stop this proposal.
