Monday Nature Mystery
We are pleased to announce the winner of our Monday Nature Mystery, Andrew Paulson! Please email us your snail mail address and preference for a hat or tote bag to: [email protected]
Congratulations to Andrew for correctly identifying the drumming of the Ruffed Grouse (Bonasa umbellus). A very interesting upland game bird, the Ruffed Grouse is often heard and not seen. According to our friends at All About Birds, ‘The male Ruffed Grouse’s signature drumming display doesn’t involve drumming on anything but air. As the bird quickly rotates its wings forward and backward, air rushes in beneath the wings creating a miniature vacuum that generates a deep, thumping sound wave that carries up to a quarter of a mile.’ Interestingly, their nests are sometimes parasitized by Wild Turkeys and Ring-necked Pheasants.
