Summer of HER Culminates With 10 Summits in Battleground States

This summer, 68 fellows from around the U.S. spent 10 weeks with us gaining the skills needed to be effective field organizers in defense of reproductive health, rights, and justice. We taught them tactics for running effective get-out-the-vote campaigns and petition drives, for using social media for digital organizing, and so much more. Their work culminated with our second annual HER Summits, held in key battleground states. Along with Population Connection Action Fund staff, our newly minted field organizers rallied over 500 new activists for the #Fight4HER campaign—our joint campaign aimed at repealing Trump’s odious Global Gag Rule forever. Attendees learned more about the Global HER Act—the legislation needed to ban the Global Gag Rule—and the current state of global reproductive health care programs. They now have the necessary tools to join the fight for international reproductive rights!

You can read more about the Summits here.

World Contraception Day

World Contraception Day Presentation

September 26 marked the 13th World Contraception Day, a day of action “to improve awareness of all contraceptive methods available and enable young people to make informed choices on their sexual and reproductive health.” Stacie Murphy, Population Connection and Population Connection Action Fund’s Director of Congressional Relations, gave a conference call presentation to Population Connection and Population Connection Action Fund members, outlining the current state of U.S. funding for domestic and international family planning programs, as well as the effects of Trump’s Global Gag Rule on health care providers around the world. She also discussed our efforts to fight back against this disastrous policy with Population Connection Action Fund’s #Fight4HER campaign.

You can listen to a recording of Stacie’s presentation here. We’d love to hear your feedback and answer any questions you may have after you listen—you can pass them along at [email protected].

Population Education’s Fall Teaching Theme: Migration

This September and October, Population Education is focusing on human migration and all the ways it shapes our world. The PopEd team is providing a wealth of resources teachers can implement in their own classrooms to explore this timely issue. One such lesson is the middle and high school activity “People on the Move,” which helps students identify “push/pull” factors for migration. Elementary school-aged children can learn about how migration has affected their own families with the lesson “Family Roots.”

You can access all of the resources PopEd staff will be highlighting through October by following the program on social media—explore all the content they’re sharing on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

Summer Match Challenge Was a Success!

Thanks to the generosity of a trio of dedicated members, Population Connection was able to double the impact of all gifts made to this challenge through September 30—all gifts made to Population Connection were matched with an equal gift to Population Connection Action Fund. Thousands of members took up the challenge, and we’re excited to report that we surpassed our $205,000 goal! This campaign will provide the resources to continue our work through the fall and into 2020—THANK YOU for your ongoing support and unflagging commitment to our mission!
