The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act was introduced in Congress last week, and the House is planning to take action on passing it as early as this week’s special session. After the For the People Act stalled in a Senate filibuster, this could be one of the last chances to federally strengthen voting rights this year!
This bill would reinstate provisions that were removed from the original Voting Rights Act of 1965 that protect voters, especially voters of color. It includes a critical oversight mandate for states with a history of racial discrimination to get approval from the Department of Justice before changing any voting procedure.
Since the 2020 Presidential Election, extreme Republican elected officials in states across the nation have introduced hundreds of voter suppression bills. In Colorado, we’ve fought for protections for voters of every race, from every neighborhood, and from every political party. It’s time to tell Congress we want these protections extended nationwide.
