I remember exactly how I felt the morning of November 9th, 2016, when I woke up and confirmed the news: Donald Trump, a right wing, white supremacist, facist, billionaire had just been elected as President of the United States. 

And while the shock, disgust, and horror of that moment has faded - the consequences of Trump’s presidency will play out for generations.

On Sept 14th, we cannot let that happen in California. As I write, a slew of right wing billionaire-funded candidates have a real shot at becoming the next Governor of California. And while the majority of Californians don’t support the recall, if they don’t turn out to vote, a right wing candidate could win with just a mere 20% of the vote or less- undoing decades of hard-fought progress on economic and racial justice issues across the board.

Extending the eviction moratorium? Winning stronger renter protections? Reiminaging public safety? Immigrant inclusion? Expanding healthcare access? Curbing climate change? You can forget all of that if we get a right wing billionaire-funded candidate in office as Governor. 

Whether you’re voting by mail, or voting in person on September 14th at your polling place, vote NO on the recall and leave the second question blank.

As we continue to live through the pandemic, we need a government that we can make work for ALL of us. A government that we can push, shape and bend toward the will of the people. A government that prioritizes our public health over business as usual, that places the right to housing over private property rights, that invests in the community services we rely on and need. A government led by any single one of these right-wing candidates will never do this.

Vote today. Vote NO on the recall. Vote for California’s future.

Este 14 de septiembre, no podemos permitir que eso suceda en California. Mientras escribo, una gran cantidad de multimillonarios de derecha tienen una oportunidad real de convertirse en el próximo gobernador de California. Y aunque la mayoría de los californianos no apoyan la destitución, si USTED no se presenta a votar, un candidato de derecha podría ganar con tan solo un 20% de los votos o menos que eso, deshaciendo décadas de duro trabajo para lograr progreso económico y avances en temas de justicia racial.

Mientras seguimos viviendo en medio de la pandemia, necesitamos un gobierno que podamos hacer que funcione para TODOS nosotros. Un gobierno que podamos empujar, moldear e inclinarlo hacia la voluntad del pueblo. Un gobierno que prioriza nuestra salud pública sobre los negocios, que coloca en primer lugar el derecho a la vivienda sobre los derechos de propiedad privada, que invierte en los servicios comunitarios de los que dependemos y necesitamos. Un gobierno dirigido por uno solo de estos candidatos de derecha nunca hará esto.

Vote HOY. Vote NO. Vote por el futuro de California.
