The House of Representatives is back from recess to work on two legislative actions that could not be more essential:

• The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act — which would restore elements of the 1965 Voting Rights Act that were gutted by recent rulings from Republicans on the Supreme Court, making it harder for people of color to vote.

• A resolution to move forward with the $3.5 trillion budget plan — necessary investments that will make America a more just society, care for children and seniors, address severe income and wealth inequality, take serious (if still inadequate) action to confront the climate crisis, and more.

Infuriatingly, some so-called moderate Democrats are threatening not to support the budget resolution. We’re not even talking about a vote on the budget itself — this is just a resolution to move forward on drafting the details of President Biden’s $3.5 trillion “Build Back Better” plan.

Nancy Pelosi, the leading Democrat in Congress, is working to pass both of these measures this week.
