Dear John:

This week, we're focusing our work on further connecting with communities of color--and also ensuring that everyone is able to cast their votes in elections. Take a look at all of our sections below and learn more about PFLAG Connects: Communities and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act!

Education

Three Steps to Being a Better Voting Rights Advocate

We’ve got great digital resources so your learning doesn’t have to slow down. Stay safe and take these steps to engage.

  1. Learn: Read about the history of--and court cases surrounding--the Voting Rights Act, courtesy of our friends at andstillIvote.org. Then, learn how the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act would make a difference. Also, take a moment to learn about the 30+ laws that 18 states have already enacted that will impact voting
  2. Watch:  Recorded in 2015, this video message from the late, great Rep. John Lewis of Georgia, is a powerful message on why your vote matters. Watch it now--and get inspired.
  3. Share: Share these GIFs [freedomtovote.art] to defend our most fundamental right, combat disinformation, and help pass the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act!

Advocacy

Take Action TODAY on the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act

The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act is landmark legislation, befitting its name and the legacy of Congressman John Lewis, that would implement historic and urgently needed protections of the freedom to vote. With redistricting around the corner, it’s imperative that the House pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act when they come back into session on the 23rd, so that the Senate can vote on both the For the People Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act as soon as they return from recess.

We need to turn up the heat on the U.S. House of Representatives who will likely be voting on this important legislation this week! We are partnering with our friends at Fair Fight Action and Stand Up America to reach out to members of the House and urge them to support H.R. 4 the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act.

Contact your U.S. House representative now and tell them to support the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act!

Something to Talk About...Live!

Join PFLAG National live this Thursday, August 26th at 4:30 PM ET/1:30 PM for Something to Talk About Live! This week, we’ll be discussing, "Conversion Therapy Hurts People. So Why Is It Still Around?" from Refinery29 by Jean Hannah Edelstein.

We'll be joined by two special guests: Julie Rodgers, who is featured in the Netflix documentary PRAY AWAY, and John Becker, who at one time went undercover at an anti-LGBTQ+ clinic to expose the practice of so-called conversion therapy

You can watch live on FacebookYouTube, LinkedIn, or Twitter.
