Team -- it’s no secret that our voting rights are hanging by a thread right now.
Since the Supreme Court gutted a key provision of the Voting Rights Act in Shelby County v. Holder in 2013, Terri Sewell has introduced and supported legislation to protect and expand voting rights -- only to have the bills stalled in Mitch McConnell’s Senate.
Terri has carried on the legacy of the Civil Rights movement and demanded equal access to the ballot box for all citizens -- and Republicans in Congress have continued to let the bills die in the Senate.
Terri just introduced H.R.4, the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act, in the House giving us a new chance to save our democracy. Speaker Pelosi and our Democratic leadership have announced that H.R. 4 will be on the House floor for a vote this week!
The House is going to do its part, but we can’t let Republicans play politics again and use the filibuster to keep the bill on the Senate floor until the clock runs out -- which is why we started a petition to show how much support Terri’s bill has from folks around the country.
The John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act will restore protections established by the original Voting Rights Act that were gutted by the Supreme Court. It prohibits states with a recent history of voter discrimination from restiricting the right to vote -- stopping these dangerous laws from ever getting passed.
This is our chance to make history and protect the right to vote once and for all.
Thanks for using your voice.
