Both New York City and Westchester County exceeded Census estimates for population growth. We’re proud of all the work you did along with Alessandra to make sure that each and every single New Yorker was counted in the 2020 Census, including joining other state senators for a “Battle of the Boroughs,” canvassing, and phonebanking with the National Association of Latino Elected and Appointed Officials.
And when Governor Cuomo waited until the last possible second to release funding for Census outreach—denying community organizations sufficient time to ensure responses—Alessandra called on him to extend the deadline for response.
You might be wondering why this is so important. Because a lot of people filled out the Census, our district will receive extra funding from the federal government to account for population growth. And, if fewer people had filled out the Census, New York could have lost another seat in the House of Representatives.
Of course, there’s still more work to do. The Census also showed that many have left New York City, largely because housing is simply too expensive, and zoning laws make it too difficult to build new homes. Alessandra is continuing to work hard to support policies that will ensure housing justice for all, so that everyone who wants to live in New York is able.
With that said, we’re so proud of all the New Yorkers who adapted to changing conditions during the worst of the pandemic and organized to ensure that as many people were counted in the 2020 Census. This kind of community outreach is important, and it’s how we’ll win a lot of the tough battles to make our state a better place to live for working families ahead.
