Friend:

People who don’t know much about church-state separation may think the fight over religion in public schools was over in 1962, when the Supreme Court outlawed enforced prayer in these purposefully neutral places.

But you and I know differently. Religious extremists and their allies in state legislatures and on school boards do everything they can to undermine religious freedom and force their Christian nationalist beliefs on our children. As a result, teachers, students and parents across the country are forced to confront religious lessons in classrooms, religious displays in corridors and proselytizing by religious clubs, coaches and “invited” youth ministers. It’s a daily deluge designed to wear down resistance and make a target of anyone courageous enough to say, “No. This is wrong.”

That’s why Americans United is offering three new guides to “Know Your Rights” to students, teachers and parents just in time for back-to-school. Click here to read them now: [link removed]

Will you help get the word out so the many people impacted by these violations know you and AU have their back? You can post them to neighborhood listservs, share with friends and family on social media, send the guides to principals, school administrators and others in your community, drop them off in libraries—you get the idea.

AU attorneys created these guides because there’s a lot of confusion and deliberate misconception about what’s legal and what isn’t. No one knows more about the current state of these laws than our lawyers. These user-friendly guides will empower students, teachers and parents to fend off religious coercion and do it the right way: with facts.

We hope these guides will help prevent violations from occurring in our public schools. But if schools continue to breach religious freedom rights, we’re ready to help. Based on your complaints, we contact school administrators many, many times each year to let them know that their actions are illegal--with great success. You can report potential violations to our legal department here: [link removed]

As always, we couldn’t do this work without you, our supporters. So as we go back to school this year, let’s not forget what the First Amendment promises all of us—the right for our public schools to treat us equally no matter what we believe.

With hope and determination,
