John,

Normally, right now we'd be emailing you about our Field of Flags matching gift campaign. But today, we are taking an important pause to reach out about the unfolding situation in Afghanistan, as our military members are again being deployed to protect those in harm's way.

As a combat-wounded Vietnam veteran, I know all too well the complex range of emotions that veterans of Afghanistan and other conflicts are feeling today -- the anger, hurt and sadness they may experience can be overwhelming and difficult to process.

We want you to know that DAV is here.

- If you are a veteran experiencing mental health issues and are in need of immediate attention, please call the free, confidential Veterans Crisis Line at 800-273-8255. If you are not a veteran, please share this resource with the veterans in your life.

- We also urge all veterans to reach out and perform buddy checks to help one another process their emotions and connect with resources. Nearly 1,300 local DAV chapters and thousands of trained service officers -- many of whom are Afghanistan veterans themselves -- stand ready nationwide to direct veterans to available resources, as well.

- Finally, if you aren't a veteran or someone in need of help yourself, please consider supporting veterans during this difficult time by making a donation to help fund DAV's critical services for veterans in need.

For nearly 20 years, a generation of American warfighters has sacrificed life, limb and well-being for their fellow countrymen and the people of Afghanistan. Our nation has always held a solemn duty to care for the men and women who are forever changed by military service.

Now -- more than ever before -- we must redouble our efforts to ensure our nation's veterans have access to the vitally important care, support and services they need. Please consider making a special gift to support DAV's free services for veterans in need today.

Thank you for supporting our nation's veterans today -- and every day, and please keep our service members and their families in your thoughts and prayers.

Andrew Marshall
DAV National Commander
