Dear John, Earlier this month, the Senate passed both the $1 trillion Invest in America Act, also known as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Package (BIF), and the $3.5 trillion budget resolution, the framework for a reconciliation bill, as advocated for by the American Sustainable Business Council. Now it is time for the House to act. The House returns from recess today and could consider both Senate-passed measures this week, but progress could be threatened. House progressives want action on the BIF delayed as leverage until the Senate passes the full reconciliation measure later this fall. In response, a group of nine moderate Democrats have threatened to oppose the budget resolution unless the BIF is approved first, enough to defeat the budget resolution.
House leaders are working on a procedural motion that could appease both sides, and allow both measures to move forward, which is essential to begin meeting critical needs as identified in President Biden’s Build Back Better agenda. ASBC is asking you to sign a letter to your Representative, urging that the House put aside political maneuvering and swiftly advance both vital pieces of legislation. The BIF includes important physical infrastructure investments, but it falls short in several areas including paid family and medical leave, climate, clean water, and agriculture. The ASBC letter also calls on the House to allow the budget reconciliation bill to include additional investments in areas inadequately covered by the BIF, such as mass transit. Sign-on now to tell your House member that we need both the $1 trillion BIF and the $3.5 trillion budget resolution, and the time to act is now!
