Building the Bridge to Black Suffrage
Aug. 26, marks Women’s Equality Day, celebrating the 19th Amendment giving white women the right to vote. More than a hundred years later, Black women are still fighting for their right to vote. More than 40 states are restricting Black voting rights. The Black Reproductive Justice Policy Agenda, provides recommendations to Congress on protecting voting rights for all people. Reproductive Justice can only be achieved when Black women, femmes, girls, and gender-expansive individuals can vote freely and without voter suppression. This month we are lifting up the Black Reproductive Justice Policy Agenda and the theme for this week, August 22-28, is: Building the Bridge to Black Suffrage. Get involved by sharing this post on social media: #WomensEqualityDay on August 26 commemorates the passing of the 19th Amendment, securing women's right to vote, but those rights were not equally extended to Black women and other women of color. Black women today are still fighting for unrestricted, unsuppressed #votingrights. It is time we end this struggle. It is time we finish building the bridge to Black suffrage.
