On the 22nd June all residents of the city were able to take part in the socially distanced Windrush celebrations, which started at the Council house then took place across the wards. The Cllrs would like to thank the Vines Community Centre for co-ordination of the event and working with other partners in the ward. For example the New Art exchange had a variety of activities like poetry and singing by Nottingham artists and hosted Take 1 Dancers performing outside their venue on Gregory Boulevard.
Hyson Green Youth Club also contributed to the day by inviting attendees to join them at their venue, to recognise the contributions of elders and ancestors from the Windrush generation, showcasing how they contributed towards the building of a culturally diverse community and enhanced the social norms in British society.
For example having a range of activities which were intergenerational, music performances, dominos for the elders. Another important part of the day was the 2min silence held for Sophia Ramcharan, who passed away earlier this year, who was a well-known volunteer in the city and made a substantial difference to ensuring black arts were made more accessible for local people in the ward.
Cllr Bryan did a ward walk on the 4th of August in the Hovendon Gardens area of the ward. Accompanied by Street Scene operatives, the SPCO Ryan Pinkett and Sam Masood the Housing Patch Manager.
The last eighteen months have been difficult for the country, not least our ward, Covid has impacted our lives in such a way that no one could anticipate. Many of the services delivered by NCC, that you relied on, to keep our ward clean and safe were all affected. Many Street Scene staff were relocated in an effort to keep our community safe and essential services like waste collection going, both during the initial pandemic and more recently as cases of the delta variant have soared.
As your Councillors we appreciate your understanding, we are working with a number of Nottingham City Council officers and other partners to restore the services you value. It will take time to getting back to some kind of normality.
However, Covid-compliant ward walks have now resumed in the ward, picking up a number of issues for resolution.
A successful fun day was delivered in partnership with Take 1 studios, the Neighbourhood Development Team and the Family mentor service on Thursday 5th August.
A variety of family friendly activities were delivered for people of all ages at the event. The morning started with a community litter pick of Bridlington Park by SSBC, as the Skills Mill team continued to work on the painting the park railings as part of the regeneration plan for the Park.
Promptly at 12am the event was opened by Courtney Rose of Take 1, with use of the Bouncy Castle followed by a variety of information stalls for example healthy eating, the CPO team , the Family mentor service provided a number of activities that went down a treat like jiggle & Wiggle, the Baby clothes bank , read on Nottingham gave free books were given out on the day, with a free barbeque kindly provided by Himmah.
At 1.00pm the Sherriff Merlita Bryan then gave a tribute to Deborah Burton and planted a tree in her memory. Deb’s she was known locally, was a long serving volunteer of BOBs Tenants and Residents Association, she was someone who as part of that group worked to encourage community cohesion and running the original fun days on the park.
The police provided a patrol car and uniforms for children to dress as mini Police. In addition, Welter weight champion, Ekow Essuman visited the event with his belts, and took time to speak to young people providing much needed inspiration and motivation, as part of the boxing activity provided by Daniel Brown who runs DCT Boxing Club. (Dreams come True) from Hyson Green Youth Club.. It was truly a fun filled day for all who attended.
Cllr Bryan planted the tree in memory of Deborah Burton, a keen volunteer lived across from the park and worked to improve the lives of local people
