As COVID-19 surges across the nation, GOP leaders continue to resist public health mandates and endanger the people they pledged to protect.

Last week, Texas governor Greg Abbott tested positive for COVID-19 after mingling with a maskless crowd of more than 100 at an indoor event. This isn't surprising, given he recently made headlines for banning mask mandates statewide. Now Texas is seeing its worst surge of COVID-19 cases yet, and there's blood on Abbott's hands.

Rather than wasting time as lives are lost across Texas, Greg Abbott needs to take action to prevent the spread of the Delta variant and protect our communities. Instead, he refuses a mask mandate, denies that the government should take any action, and disputes with public health experts.

It is not a question of “if” Texas turns blue, it's simply a question of “when.”

The Texas Tribune reports that Democrats are awaiting Beto O'Rourke's potential campaign announcement for governor of Texas. Beto came within 2.6% of defeating Ted Cruz in 2018 -- and Texas has only become more blue since. Beto's already traveling the state, knocking on doors, appearing at rallies, and meeting with voters. And when Beto defeats Abbott in 2022 and turns Texas blue, Democrats will almost certainly keep our House and Senate majorities and continue to pass progressive legislation that makes America work for every American, not just the very rich and big corporations that are supporting Greg Abbott.

We will be with Beto every step of the way because every single Democratic vote will matter in this race, but we're still $986 short of today's midnight fundraising deadline. It's absolutely crucial that we smash this goal, because, if we don't, we'll have to scale back our 2022 strategy and shrink our efforts in Texas, when we should be expanding them immediately.
