U.S. troops being withdrawn from Afghanistan does not absolve us of responsibility for the Afghan people in distress under the new Taliban regime.

We have a moral obligation to aid all those left behind in Afghanistan, and we can do that by assisting in the evacuation of those in danger and opening our arms to Afghan refugees desperately seeking safety.

Afghan women who broke barriers to get an education and advocate for equal rights face imminent danger under Taliban rule.

The lives of soldiers, translators, and U.S. citizens alike are also at risk now that the Afghan president has fled the country and the Taliban have seized control of the government.

But we are not powerless. In fact, we must confront the countless misguided decisions that eventually resulted in this crisis. Simply put, the very least we can do is help all those in danger after living through decades of instability.
