Friend,

The recall election is just over 3 weeks away on September 14th. CLCV is working overtime to educate voters on the recall and get out the vote to stop the baseless effort to replace Governor Newsom with a pro-polluter, climate crisis denier.

Polls are showing this election is too close to call. The last thing we want is another 2016 where we all ask if we should have done more the day after Election Day. We cannot stand by and hope for the best—we need to turn out every voter that we can to keep Governor Newsom in office.

The risk of having a climate denier in the Governor’s office is too high. The current frontrunner to replace Governor Newsom called climate change a "crock" and swore to end the “war on oil and gas.” Replacing the leader of the world’s fifth largest economy with an anti-environment governor would set us back indefinitely, especially given the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change’s recent report.

“The IPCC’s latest report confirms that we can act on the climate crisis by reducing carbon emissions, but this requires policymakers to hold corporate polluters accountable to change. Voters across California and party lines agree that climate change is a top concern, and the good news is that we have the policy solutions.

The IPCC makes it clear that delay is not an option.

Every Californian needs to stand together to hold our government accountable for aggressive action now.”

 -Mary Creasman, CEO of CLCV

If the recall succeeds, and the governor’s office is occupied by a pro-polluter, the necessary action we so desperately need will be delayed. The CLCV State PAC needs your support to ensure we have the resources to educate environmental voters throughout every region of the state on the importance of voting NO on recalling Governor Newsom on September 14th.

Environmental Community Voter Guide

  • VOTE NO on the Recall by Tuesday, September 14th.
  • Every registered voter will soon receive a ballot in the mail. Locate your ballot, VOTE NO, and mail it back (no postage necessary).
  • Tell three of your friends to VOTE NO on the recall and turn in their ballots, as well.
  • The environmental community can’t sit this one out. We must VOTE NO to prevent a pro-polluter, climate denier from getting into office and stopping the progress we've made in California.

Governor Newsom has been leading the state through a tough transition and a national pandemic yet did not lose sight of the climate crisis. He signed an executive order that will prohibit the sale of new passenger cars, buses and trucks that use gasoline by 2035 and 2045, respectively; he ordered an end to new fracking permits by 2024, and to phase out fossil fuel extraction by 2045; and he signed an executive order to protect 30% of California’s land and water by 2030. A pro-polluter at the helm in California will wreak havoc on our environmental future.

CLCV’s State PAC funds bold, pro-environment candidates running for state legislative and statewide offices and has been proud to support Governor Gavin Newsom over the last few years. In 2021, keeping Governor Newsom in office and defending him against the baseless recall effort are one of the top priorities of the CLCV State PAC. Our PAC efforts support candidates who have a proven track record of leading on climate justice and equity issues; Governor Newsom clearly fits the bill and has prioritized environmental issues during his time in the Governor’s office. Contributions to CLCV State PAC will be used at CLCV’s sole discretion and are not being earmarked for use in any particular candidate or election.

We believe that radical change is necessary and only by transforming our political system will we create the opportunity to take bold action on climate change. We elect and cultivate environmental champions, turn election victories into policy wins, hold our lawmakers accountable, and build political power for change. We inspire hope and action and fight for equity and justice for all Californians. We are in the business of changing what’s possible.
