Earlier this week, we reached out about the fundraising challenges facing Cheri and all African American women who run for Congress, and we’re determined to change it.
Here’s the bottom line: On average, African American women running for Congress raised only about HALF of what white candidates raised according to the Center for Responsive Politics’ analysis.
That’s outrageous, but this is a real challenge we could face in this campaign unless we all do our part to support Cheri.

Right now, there are zero African American women in the Senate, and we need to be honest about some of the reasons for that.
One of the biggest obstacles that African American women running for office must confront is fundraising.
In 2018, the Center for Responsive Politics’ analysis said, "The average Black female candidate raised 46 percent less than the average white male candidate, but she also raised 55 percent less than the average white female candidate."
Too often the traditional gatekeepers and political establishment have doubted the ability of African American women to win.
The fact is we know not only can Cheri win, but she is Democrats’ best chance to flip this seat. She leads in primary polling and is the only Democrat who has won statewide before.
So we have to make sure our campaign has the resources necessary to compete and challenge any question of if Cheri has what it takes to win.
The obstacles we face in this campaign may be daunting at times, but together, we can overcome them and open the doors of opportunity for every North Carolinian.
