Friend,
Why did the Interior Department just give this mining company a huge discount on the cost of extracting coal?
Arch Resources Inc., the nation's second-largest coal company, asked the Interior Department for permission to mine federal coal at a discounted rate -- and earlier this year, the department quietly approved.[1]
When the government gives companies a discount on mining federal land, we pick up the bill. We have to stop subsidizing climate change with our tax dollars.
Add your name today and call on the Interior Department to stop giving discounts to coal companies.

Whenever a company mines coal on public land, it pays royalties to the government -- a percent of the value of the coal they produce. The money the government raises this way is used to provide public services for you and me.
But discounts for coal companies are a colossal waste of money -- and they're also a direct threat to the planet. This giveaway to Arch Resources Inc. isn't just a one-time thing -- it's something the Interior Department could repeat for other mining operations as well.
The bottom line is that we need to stop burning fossil fuels and shift to clean, renewable sources of energy as swiftly as possible. We are already seeing the devastating effects of climate change across the nation, from intense storms to devastating droughts.
Giant coal companies don't need discounts at our expense. Take action today.

Arch Resources Inc. used to pay 12.5 percent royalties at one of its mines. Now, the Interior Department has agreed to let the company pay only 2 percent. That's a lot of money going to a private company instead of funding public services. And the company certainly doesn't need a discount: Arch Resources reported a net income of $30 million in the second quarter of 2021.[2]
We need to take action to ensure that the Interior Department stops propping up an industry that's contributing to the climate crisis. A safe, healthy future for our children and grandchildren depends on it.
Tell the Interior Department: No discounts for coal companies.
