John, Secretaries of State have seen their jobs change in massive and unexpected ways over the course of the last decade. And now, DASS members are caught in the crossfire as our nation grapples with growing far-right extremism.
In 2016 , our elections came under harsh scrutiny as Donald Trump and his lackeys pushed conspiracy theories to contest the FBI investigation into Russian interference.
In 2020 , President Trump began threatening election officials, actively undermining the USPS to delay mail-in ballots, and even trying to persuade one Secretary of State to “find” votes in his favor!
And now , our Secretaries have to grapple with threats towards themselves and their families, conspiracy-driven election lawsuits, and running our elections smoothly.

It’s not an easy time to be an election official. Our Secretaries are, in the words of Connecticut Secretary of State Denise Merrill, “in the center of the storm”.
