Greetings,
Thank you for taking the time to check in with me. As your Representative in Washington, I wanted to touch base with you about the recent updates on voting legislation in Congress. Just this week, House Democrats took promising steps to stem the tide of anti-democratic voter suppression tactics that state legislatures are enacting across the nation.
In this year alone, eighteen states have enacted thirty laws that will consequently hinder voters’ ability to cast their ballot, including the state of Georgia's passage of H.B. 202.
READ: Congressman David Scott’s Statement on March 25, 2021 regarding Georgia Governor Brian Kemp signing elections bill SB 202 into law: “SB 202 is a terrible bill that harks back to the years of Jim Crow, and it is truly unconscionable that in this day and age Georgia State Legislators would attempt to disenfranchise eligible voters,” Congressman Scott stated.
We cannot let this infringement on Americans’ access to the ballot box continue, and as the Georgia delegation stated in our letter to Georgia Speaker of the House Ralston and Georgia Senate Majority Leader Dugan earlier this year, “Exceptional voter turnout should be celebrated, not discouraged.”
Now, House Democrats are taking further action to protect the right to vote by reintroducing H.R. 4, the John R. Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. The bill honors life and legacy of the late John Lewis, who dedicated his life in the pursuit of justice, and takes a profound step in restoring the Voting Rights Act of 1965 to secure voter protections for Americans.
Earlier this year, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 1, the For The People Act, to address voter access, election integrity and security, campaign finance, and ethics for the three branches of government. The bill is now with the Senate for consideration—and I strongly urge them to enact this legislation.
The John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the For The People Act are essential to protecting our access to the ballot, and I look forward to voting to pass H.R. 4 when the House returns next week.
Do you believe that Congress should support additional protections for voters?
