BY MARY GIOVAGNOLI | With humanitarian crises in Afghanistan, Haiti and at the border, the U.S. must reassess what kind of lasting policy changes would prepare us to protect refugees and other vulnerable people in need around the world.

"If the U.S. is unprepared to handle a rescue mission in Afghanistan, one that many had predicted would be needed, the consequences of a natural disaster for one of our nearest neighbors or the continued migration of Central Americans seeking protection from violence, corruption and economic despair, then we can never be the leader in humanitarian protection that we aspire to be."

 
 
 
Bengali Women File Class-Action Sexual Assault Lawsuit Against N.Y. Doctor: “Like an Andrew Cuomo of Jackson Heights”

BAKER | On August 13, four Bengali women from the Jackson Heights neighborhood of Queens, N.Y., filed a class-action lawsuit against Dr. Ferdous Khandker, alleging decades of sexual assault and harassment of dozens of women and girls under the auspices of providing medical care. The women sought out attorney Susan Crumiller, who calls her firm “the feminist litigation firm.”

On the day the class-action lawsuit against Khandker was filed, Ms. spoke with Susan Crumiller to learn more about how the case and what’s at stake.

 
 
 
Reforming Law Enforcement Training Could Reduce The High Rate of Sexual Assault Case Attrition

BY ANTOINETTE BONSIGNORE | Washington state has started addressing the imperative of sexual assault case attrition in a very unique way. Its first-in-the nation sexual assault case review program should become a national best practice for any jurisdiction that wants to reform the criminal justice system’s response to sexual assault survivors and sexual assault cases.
