Ayanna and our movement have been leading the call to cancel at least $50,000 in student loan debt, and we wanted to dispel some myths about the student debt crisis.
There are a lot of misconceptions about the student debt crisis in the U.S. — and the movement to end it. So, we wanted to shed some light on the myths vs. the realities:
🚫 MYTH — The student loan debt crisis is not really a crisis.
✅ REALITY — More than 44 million people collectively shoulder the burden of over $1.7 trillion in student debt.
🚫 MYTH — Cancelling student debt would only help a small number of ‘elite’ students who attended Ivy League schools.
✅ REALITY — 49 percent of federal student borrowers attended public colleges, and only 0.3 percent attended Ivy League schools.
🚫 MYTH — Cancelling student debt has nothing to do with equity and racial justice.
✅ REALITY — Decades of racist housing, economic, and other policies have kept Black and Brown families from building generational wealth. As a result, 85% of Black students have no choice but to take out loans to attend college and Black women, in particular, have the highest student loan debt of any racial or economic group.
Ayanna and our movement have been leading the fight to cancel at least $50,000 in student loan debt, and we will continue to pressure the Biden Administration to extend this much needed relief to the millions of Americans saddled with the crushing burden of student loan debt.
And we’re being heard. The Department of Education just recently extended the pause on student loan payments until next year, and announced the cancelation of student debt for over 300,000 borrowers through the Total and Permanent Disability (TPD) discharge program — now they must take the next step and permanently cancel at least $50,000 in student loan debt for every borrower.
A $3 contribution from you right now will send a powerful message to the Biden Administration that it’s time to do what’s right and extend relief to millions of student loan borrowers by cancelling student loan debt permanently – can you make a $3 contribution now?
