The Latest Research, Commentary, And News From Health Affairs

Friday, August 20, 2021

Dear John,

In an August article in Health Affairs, authors examined how political
determinants like democratic quality inform universal health coverage
and health spending.

Democracy And Universal Coverage

Despite the intentionally identified importance of universal health
coverage-as emphasized by its inclusion in the UN Sustainable
Development Goals-progress on achieving this goal worldwide has been
uneven.

Examining three decades of data from 170 countries, Tara Templin and
coauthors considered how democratic and autocratic values inform
universal health coverage and health spending
.

The authors found a positive association between democratic quality and
universal health care coverage, a relationship strongest in low-income
countries. The relationship even held amid economic downturns, with
democracies more likely than autocracies to maintain universal coverage
when access to affordable health services matters most.
