Friend --
This week we lost a patriot.
Rep. Elijah E. Cummings has died at the age of 68.
A sharecropper’s son, Rep. Cummings became the powerful chairman of the Oversight and Reform Committee, recently spearheading investigations into President Trump, and was a force of nature in Congress and a champion for Baltimore advocating for the disenfranchised within his Black majority district.
As the new freshman class of Congress, including our endorsed Black women candidates, Reps. Ayanna Pressley, Ilhan Omar, Jahana Hayes, Lauren Underwood, and Lucy McBath, entered into their roles this year—Rep. Cummings asked many of them one question: “Are you here to do the work?” and with their assurances he became a great source of wisdom to guide their work and advocated on their behalf making sure their voices were being heard and understood.
A true patriot indeed.
We mourn this great loss to our country and offer our condolences to his family. Please join us in celebrating the life of Rep. Elijah E. Cummings and share your thanks for his service and your warmest condolences by signing our card today.
