It's been a week since a violent 7.2-magnitude earthquake shook Haiti, and I can't tell you the devastation that is still unfolding on the ground. As other tragic events around the world have emerged and developed, and despite the determination of its people, Haiti faces unbearable heartbreak and destruction. And disaster after disaster, they feel alone, forgotten, tired.
Supporter, our Haitian-led community partners need our help. They have sprung into action, but the needs are enormous and every dollar counts in saving lives and providing a sense of hope and compassion over neglect.
Please, if you are able, rush an emergency gift to support relief and recovery efforts in Haiti. 100% of your gift will go to frontline organizations—including TAPARI, The Smile Trust, Ayiti Community Trust, and BlocPower—sending medical supplies, providing aid to hospitals, and securing temporary housing for
the most vulnerable.
The death toll continues to rise—upwards of 2,100 lives have been lost at this point. Homes are destroyed, leaving tens of thousands of families homeless. Hospitals in the worst-hit areas are incapacitated. And much of the destruction was even before Tropical Storm Grace brought heavy rain and flooding over the same region.
The suffering is heartbreaking. Emergency workers continue to comb over rubble, piles of rocks, and crumbled cement. Residents beg for tents and tarps. Mudslides and washed-out roads have made aid even more challenging. Already struggling with insufficient resources to deal with the pandemic and political unrest, Haiti has had to face one disaster after another.

Haiti is one of the most vulnerable areas in the world to the climate crisis. Caught in a dangerous weather cycle, dry seasons have become severe droughts, and destructive hurricanes have worsened and become more frequent. So as we work to provide immediate relief, we must also help Haiti recover and rebuild with resilience. Funds raised will also help provide children's hospitals with solar power and batteries to strengthen their ability to respond now and in the face of future climate disasters.
One thing gives me hope, right now: time and again, I have seen Sierra Club supporters step up to help out people in need. When people are suffering—everything from hurricanes to fires to flooding—you have been there to offer your support.
