I need to tell you about a powerful person whose name you may not hear a lot.
Jerome Powell runs the Federal Reserve (a.k.a. “the Fed”), which was established by Congress over a century ago to supervise banks and to stabilize our financial system.
And it’s not even close:
Our economy has never faced a threat more severe than climate change, which is happening even faster and doing even more damage than feared.
But the Fed — under Powell — has done shockingly little to confront the obvious risks the climate crisis poses for our financial system.
Powell was Donald Trump’s pick to run the Fed, and he’s got to go.
President Biden must replace Jerome Powell with a new Federal Reserve chair who (1) recognizes climate change as the economic catastrophe it is and (2) will do everything in the Fed’s considerable power to protect the American people from that risk.
Add your name.
Thanks for taking action.
For progress,
- Robert Weissman, President of Public Citizen
P.S. For half a century, Public Citizen has been advancing policies that put the needs of everyday Americans before the greed of billionaires and Big Business. That legacy of progress and that ongoing work could not matter more right now, as our nation transitions to a Joe Biden presidency that will be as progressive as we — you and Public Citizen, together — make it. We’re also busy undoing all the damage Trump did. And, like so many nonprofits and small businesses, we continue to experience financial strain related to the coronavirus pandemic. If you can, please make an emergency donation today to support the critical work we’re doing together or even join our popular Monthly Giving program. Thank you.
