John — I want to introduce you to one of my closest friends in Congress, Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin [MI-D].
Elissa served in national security roles for presidents of both parties, and in Congress she’s fighting for economic security, affordable healthcare, and clean water. She represents Michigan’s 8th district, which includes Lansing and Mid-Michigan.
Our road to the House of Representatives has a lot of parallels. Elissa and I both served in the CIA, and before we ran for Congress, neither of us ever imagined we would run for office. We were happily serving our country in the national security world, but after President Trump’s election in 2016, something changed.
Both of us went home to districts that had been represented by Republicans for years, but we felt that our Republican congressmen weren’t living up to their promise to represent and serve our communities. The tone and tenor of our politics were unbecoming of the country we loved and had served, and we both made the decision to run.
When we got to Congress, the way we approached governing and politics was just different. And as we governed through the turbulence of 2019 and 2020, we did so not by simply asking how we would get ourselves re-elected, but by voting our conscience and standing up for our values.
Sadly, many of our class of 2018 colleagues were not re-elected in 2020. Elissa and I both won our races by tight margins, and now are under constant attack from GOP groups that want to flip our seats in 2022. Frankly, we represent two “must win” districts if Democrats want to keep the slim House majority.
Consider splitting a contribution today between the two of us that will help us defend our seats, and continue governing with principle and integrity.
