John,
America's economy is flatlining, and it's time for Congress to restart the heart. President Lyndon B. Johnson's bold, anti-poverty movement is the blueprint.
On this day in 1964, President Johnson launched his "War on Poverty." This federally funded initiative led to America having the lowest poverty rate ever recorded at the time just a decade later.
Make no mistake, John -- America has always had the tools to tackle poverty aggressively. But partisan gridlock and bickering have often stood in the way of progress. Now, with COVID-19 infection rates continuing to rise, Americans need Congress to think BIG. We can't afford to miss the moment.
Will you join me in demanding Congress put politics aside and focus on tackling poverty? We need to put our differences aside to invest in American families and workers with every tool we have.
Right now, only 39% of Americans would be able to cover an unexpected $1,000 expense, rents are getting higher while wages stagnate, and families in Philadelphia and America are living paycheck to paycheck.
We need an infrastructure plan that brings good-paying, union jobs to our community and addresses inequalities built into the system. We need affordable housing and a $15 minimum wage, and it's time to make the expanded child tax credit permanent.
I'm proud President Joe Biden increased SNAP benefits, extended the eviction moratorium, and passed relief. But we need to do more, right now.
Everyone deserves equal opportunity to THRIVE. And I'm taking a pro-community, pro-family, pro-American approach to tackling poverty at the root so that no child, parent, veteran, student, senior, or worker is left behind. If you're with me, call on Congress to take a note from President Johnson's playbook and tackle poverty now.
Thank you,
Dwight
