Dear John,
We’ve received so many amazing entries for our 2021 Environmental Photo Contest so far! If you haven’t gotten around to it yet, you have until September 1st to email your photo(s) to
[email protected]. The grand-prize winner will be featured on the cover of our 2021 Environmental Scorecard, and receive a surprise gift! And, for the first time, there will also be a winner for each category--Climate Change Close to Home, Local Wildlife, and Pet Adventures.
In the Climate Change Close to Home category, one entry that’s stuck with me is firefighter Anthony Wellines’ firsthand experience with one of the most prominent effects of climate change in the west--increased wildfires. “These are just a few of the several hundred photos I took last year during my 87 days out on fires in the PNW and midwest,” he wrote.
In the Local Wildlife category, I loved this photo of 5-year-old Sullivan, shocked at the sight of coastal elk at Fort Stevens State Park. “My son thought it was so cool to be this close to elk!” his dad, Jason Pruett, wrote.
And, in the Pet Adventures category, I couldn’t stop looking at this cute pup in a backpack, sent in by Ilene Moss during a hike on the Peter Skene Ogden Trail. “Mochi’s first hike in Central Oregon,” she wrote. “His feet were so hot — fortunately we happened to have a big enough backpack with us!”
The winners will be announced at our Annual Celebration for the Environment (which, if you haven’t heard, has gone virtual once again this year). I look forward to seeing all your entries! When you send your photos to
[email protected], remember to let us know which category they’re in, why they’re important, and where they were taken. And, of course, please reach out if you have any questions!
Thank you,
Francesca Varela
