Last week, a Texas federal judge issued a permanent injunction that puts trans health care in jeopardy -- again.
Since trans health care discrimination was barred under the ACA in 2016, religious health care providers have stopped at nothing to obliterate these protections. In 2020, the Trump administration gutted federal protections for trans people and adopted blanket religious freedom exemptions. The Biden administration has since restored these protections for trans people, but the fight is far from over.
The new ruling was issued on behalf of religious health care providers who feared the Biden administration would interpret the ACA as requiring them to perform abortions and gender-transition treatment. The injunction grants health care providers the power to refuse health care based on their religious beliefs.
It's a license to discriminate and one that puts people's health and lives in jeopardy.
Other people's religious beliefs should not impact your health care, but far too often we see powerful Christian nationalists exploit their faith to chip away at the rights of American citizens.
We want to push back against the Christian nationalist agenda that's coming to dominate our nation. We want to inform Americans of the threats to their individual freedoms, advocate for progressive legislation that strengthens the wall between church and state, and work to support leaders and legislation that will make for a more secular, more progressive, more freethinking America.
