Dear John,
The news stories and images out of Afghanistan this week have been harrowing and heartbreaking. As the country reverts to Taliban rule, millions of Afghans fear for their lives, rights, and freedoms.
After decades of U.S.-led war, the United States has a responsibility to help Afghans who want to leave the country.
Tell President Biden and Congress: Grant asylum to Afghan refugees and ensure as many people as possible can seek safety in the U.S.! [link removed]
The rapid rise of the Taliban and the destabilization of the country is a tragic and predictable outcome of decades of U.S.-led war and military occupation. There are reports of extreme regression of rights for women, who are very vulnerable under Taliban rule. There are also reports of people being shot at and killed while taking part in protests in recent days.
We know now that U.S. leaders understood that war would only lead to further devastation, yet they continued to spend trillions on military intervention. Now, we must call on the U.S. to invest in diplomacy with all parties—and stop using the same militarized approaches that have failed us time and again. The U.S. and international community must support people’s efforts to leave the country—and must also support humanitarian efforts and protection of human rights for those who remain.
Tell U.S. policymakers today: Assist Afghans seeking safety! [link removed]
