Early vote begins this week in Ohio for one of the most important races of the year. If elected, Councilman Basheer Jones would become the first Muslim Mayor of Cleveland. Will you join me in this historic moment and support his campaign?

My organizing partner, Mohamed Gula, and I first met the Councilman in Georgia at the Atlanta Masjid of Al-Islam three years ago amongst many bright and dedicated Muslim organizers from across the country. It was our final gathering before we flew back home after a powerful week of training, planning, and dreaming of a better tomorrow. I had a full heart but an empty notebook unsure of where to begin.

Then, Councilman Basheer Jones walked in to speak and suddenly I could not write fast enough.

Councilman Jones, who won his election in 2017 by only 13 votes, spoke about his journey leading him to serve others. Underscoring his election win that EVERY vote matters. He went on to share how his mother inspired him by reminding him that “the medicine for our anger is gratefulness - be grateful.” And just like his mother, his legacy of service is embodied with what he shared with us that day in Atlanta. He said, “the true definition of success is not how far you go but how you come back and bring others with you.” These words were the driving force behind returning to Cleveland after graduating with honors from Morehouse College. He does not move alone, he moves with his people.
