Friend,

It's not enough to say that I'm heartbroken by the news coming out of Afghanistan – I'm gutted. I've been devastated to watch as the Taliban take Kabul, Afghans cling to planes to escape their own country, and women and girls are left terrified of the future that lies ahead for them.

The last few days have been nothing short of tragic, but they have not been surprising. Our partners seem to have been largely left behind to work toward a free and safe Afghanistan alone. And that is not right.

During this difficult time, I want to address my fellow veterans specifically: I've talked with so many of you who have served in Afghanistan, and I know the anguish that you feel. I want you to know that you did not serve in vain. As a veteran and now a congresswoman, let me say on behalf of our nation: Thank you for your service. You bravely protected our homeland from terrorism and improved the lives of countless Afghans in the process.

As an Air Force veteran, I proudly served my country – and I will continue to serve today by doing everything I can to help our own service members and the most vulnerable during this humanitarian crisis. If you know anyone in Afghanistan who would like to leave, please offer the following resources that could help them:

* U.S. citizens in Afghanistan who want to leave the country may fill out this form.

* Those who have been approved for a Special Immigrant Visa can email [email protected] or call 1-603-334-0828.

* Contractors with U.S. forces, non-governmental organizations, or those who work in the media in Afghanistan can find information on the P-2 safe passage admissions program here.

Right now, Afghanistan is in dire straits, and I am focused on helping and on keeping us safe. There will be a time (perhaps in parallel) to debate the military and diplomatic strategy that led us to this point. When that time comes, please know that I will take an active part in oversight and in leading those tough conversations.

You elected me to serve us all in Congress, I am very thankful to you for that every day. I will work every day to provide aid to those in need and to support those who fight against tyranny.

There is work to be done.

– Chrissy
