John,
The Senate has officially passed the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. There's a lot that this infrastructure package does right. It will:
Invest over $100 billion toward upgrading our worn-down bridges and highways and make the largest federal investment in passenger rail since the creation of Amtrak.
Expand broadband to ensure every household has access to affordable, reliable high-speed internet -- a necessity in the time of COVID-19.
Invest in clean drinking water and wastewater infrastructure -- the largest in history -- to ensure every community has access to safe drinking water.
Tackle the climate crisis by investing in electric vehicle infrastructure and clean energy.
These are all necessary, overdue investments, but Congress can and should do more -- especially in tackling racial injustice and economic inequality. Last month, the House passed my Reconnecting Communities bill to invest $20 billion to rebuild, reconnect, and transform inner-city infrastructure, including here in Philadelphia. But that bill got whittled down to a measly $1 billion investment in the Senate.
These investments could be as simple as resurfacing a road and as revolutionary as reimagining city bus routes so a worker no longer has to take four buses just to get work. It's about reconnecting our communities and reversing the racist history of America's highway systems.
John, I'm not giving up until we pass an infrastructure package that includes every single community. If you're with me, House Democrats, and President Joe Biden in the work to rebuild our nation back better and stronger than before, add your name next to mine to show support » [link removed]
