Right now, our country is witnessing a large-scale, coordinated, and – unfortunately – effective assault on voting rights by the Republican Party. In nearly every state, the GOP has introduced more than 400 bills to stop voters – especially voters of color – from participating in the democratic process at the ballot box. Those bills are now law in states like Arizona, Florida, and Georgia – states that are key in national elections, and the GOP knows it.
To put a stop to voter suppression, the Senate has introduced the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the For the People Act – but there’s one thing standing in the way of passing these bills: the filibuster.
The filibuster was designed to benefit the rich, white and powerful – and politicians have historically used it to enact minority rule at the expense of the public. In 1964, politicians nearly killed the Civil Rights act with the filibuster. Today, it’s being used to stall voter protections and stop The Equality Act, which would expand protections under the Civil Rights Act to LGBTQ+ Americans. Meanwhile, just a few years ago, a multi-trillion-dollar tax cut for the rich passed because it wasn’t subject to the filibuster. When will the imbalance be enough? When will we start prioritizing working-class Americans OVER the top 1%?
At this critical moment, Americans must decide: Should we maintain an archaic practice that perpetuates inequality, or protect democracy and ensure that progressive policy can pass? For us, the choice is easy – the filibuster must go, but we need this grassroots team to join us in pushing for its elimination. Will you sign our petition now?
Tell the Senate: Abolish the filibuster to protect voting rights.
It’s going to take a groundbreaking grassroots push to finally put an end to minority rule, strengthen our democracy, and grow the economy from the middle out. The filibuster is the single biggest barrier to economic policies that will root out the gross income inequality in our country – so we’re really counting on your petition signature.
