Many Colorado students went back to school this week. And next week, Denver Public Schools students will return for another school year in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. I applaud Denver Public Schools for its leadership in prioritizing the health and safety of students and teachers. It is my hope that other districts around the state follow their lead.

After the disruptions of last year, I am hopeful that by following CDC guidelines and students getting vaccines as they become available to them, we will have a great school year.

We can take every precaution available to mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in schools, keep students safe, and protect in-person learning. This includes social distancing, vaccines for eligible students, and masks for all.

My mom was a public school teacher in DPS, and I am a proud graduate of South High School. This time of year always brings back fond memories. It is my hope that even during a pandemic, it can create fond memories for the families of Colorado as well.
