Hi John,
Many states, localities, and families are gearing up for a new school year. While many students fell behind because of virtual learning and some states’ hesitation in reopening schools, administrators are looking for ways to bring them back up to speed. Some school boards are extending the school year, but others are seeking other, counterproductive measures.
Oregon’s governor signed a law allowing students to graduate without proving their ability to write or do math at the high school level. Why? She claims it will further “equity” and benefit minorities in the state. In Virginia, liberals are looking at similar policies - to eliminate advanced high school diplomas and all accelerated math classes before the 11th grade. These policies will not only cause students to fall further behind but will also punish the drive for achievement.
Conservatives, on the other hand, believe in high standards of education that make our students competitive and set them up for success in the future. States must ensure the integrity of our education systems to secure the futures of generations to come.
