Dear friend,

Watching the devastating situation unfold in Afghanistan has been sobering and painful for all of us.

A single email cannot adequately express the difficulty of the situation, and there are no easy solutions to a crisis with such a complicated and long history. But there are actions we can take to help, and we can draw hope from the people and organizations who are dedicated to this critical work.

One nonprofit that I'm drawing hope from today is the Lutheran Immigration and Refugee Service (LIRS). The LIRS is dedicated to helping Afghan refugees and asylum seekers settle in the Seattle and Tacoma areas -- as well as across the country.

If you live in Tacoma or Seattle and you've been wondering what you could do to help: The LIRS is seeking volunteers in our area to assist with airport pickups, meal services, and more. You can learn more about the LIRS and opportunities to help here.

As the events in Afghanistan continue to unfold, it's my hope that America will mirror the people of our region and work together as a nation to welcome and support all refugees seeking asylum and safety.
