Donald Trump spent his entire term trying to open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling, and in the final hours of his administration he appeared to succeed.

Once sworn into office, President Joe Biden issued an executive order pausing fossil fuel drilling. But his order is temporary, and if nothing else changes, he will be required by law to hold another fossil fuel auction in 2024.

The article from The Wilderness Society lays out the stakes: This is our best opportunity to permanently restore the protections for the refuge’s 1.5 million-acre coastal plain. In fact, SEEC member Rep. Jared Huffman has written the bill to rollback the opening of ANWR to fossil fuel drilling. His Arctic Refuge Protection Act would restore protections indisputably.
