American History and Civics Initiative
Reaches 300 K-12 Teachers in Two Intensive Weeks

[link removed]

The American Civics and History Initiative ([link removed]) (ACHI), a collaborative pilot project between the Jack Miller Center ([link removed]) , the Ashbrook Center ([link removed]) , and the Bill of Rights Institute ([link removed]) , just concluded 30 summer programs for 300 Florida teachers over two intensive weeks.

The ACHI project aims to make high-quality education programs available to thousands of social studies teachers all across the state and to create a model for expanding the initiative around the country.

The three organizations are offering an array of programs throughout Florida and working in cooperation with state leaders and the Florida Department of Education so that more teachers can participate.

Each seminar helps middle and high school teachers deepen their understanding of America's founding principles and key primary source documents so they can better teach their students. Summer programs produced substantial waitlists, and we are working to offer more programming to meet demand.

The model is proving successful and we are currently in discussion with governors and state leaders in other regions to discuss their civic education needs. This groundbreaking project in Florida joins our K-12 teacher initiatives ([link removed]) currently in six other regions around the country.

"While throwing stones at the past might make students feel superior to their forefathers, allowing students to contend with their own place in American civic life made them feel connected to the past and empowered for the future.... I believe that my students ended the school year both appreciating the ideals of our great Republic, and being committed to its protection and preservation. And, that’s a big 'WIN' in my book!"

From K-12 Through College
JMC's National Network of Professors Expands This Summer to More Than 1,000 Scholars

We could not take our teacher education programs across the country without our national network of college educators. They are invaluable to our nationwide efforts to reach students, from K-12 through college. This summer, our network surpassed 1,000 scholars through our specialized summer programs.

JMC held its 28th Summer Institute this month—our flagship program of seminars, publishing and curricular workshops, and networking activities—that brings promising early-career scholars into our network.

This year, attendees explored the topic of "Civic Education and the American Republic." Young scholars of American political thought and history attended sessions led by JMC senior faculty partners and met fellow peers who are also working to develop their teaching careers.

These new fellows join JMC’s community of college educators ([link removed]) dedicated to the study and teaching of America’s founding principles. We support their career development and provide ongoing opportunities to learn and connect.

As this community grows, the ability to make a significant impact in the education of students across the nation also grows, exponentially.
