Dear John, You’ve already seen the headlines, videos, Tweets and images. Now read the facts: - A humanitarian crisis is unfolding in Afghanistan
- An enormous spike in violence and insecurity – the latest in 40 years of conflict – has seen displacement increase dramatically in almost every province of the country
- More than 550,000 people have been forced to flee their homes across the country in 2021 alone, adding to the nearly 3 million who were already internally displaced
- 80% of all Afghans displaced since May are women and children
- Afghans are also battling drought, food scarcity, COVID-19 and a health service on the edge of collapse
- With our partners, UNHCR has provided food, shelter, cash, hygiene and sanitary kits and other life-saving assistance to more than a quarter of a million people this year
- UNHCR and partners remain operational in nearly two thirds of districts in Afghanistan, and are able to access all provinces
- Our teams in Afghanistan will stay and deliver humanitarian aid for the Afghan people for as long as we are able to access vulnerable people in need
