We've made critical progress in the fight against COVID-19, but the highly contagious Delta variant is still spreading rapidly. Here in Rhode Island, COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations have been increasing and we need to take steps to get this outbreak under control. In fact, hospitalizations in Rhode Island are back over 100 for the first time since May.

That’s why I'm now requiring all of my staff members in the Treasury to wear masks again, regardless of their vaccination status. The CDC recommends areas with high transmission of COVID-19 should bring back indoor masking, and by their standards, Rhode Island is at more than double the transmission rate where indoor masking is appropriate.

I’m also requiring that my staff get vaccinated or provide a weekly negative test. We're the first department to make this decision and I’ve urged my colleagues in government to join me.

Finally, last week I joined the American Academy of Pediatrics in calling for a mask mandate in all Rhode Island schools. In-person schooling is critical, especially for lower income families, and masking is essential to students returning in-person safely. Governor McKee has refused to do this and I simply disagree with him on this - masks are critical to protecting students, particularly those who are too young to get vaccinated and we need leadership on an issue this important.

It's on all of us to do what we can to stop the spread of this deadly virus. The COVID-19 vaccine remains the best defense against COVID-19. If you have not been vaccinated yet or need a COVID-19 test, I urge you to do so. Check out these resources below:
