For many families, changes to the Thrifty Food Plan will close the gap between Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits and meal costs
The maximum SNAP benefit fell short of covering the average cost of a modestly priced meal in 96 percent of counties in 2020, but the share dropped to 41 percent with a temporary boost under the American Rescue Plan Act. The new, permanent increase will shrink the gap to just 21 percent.
