John,
For the last two decades, Republicans and Democrats alike have supported a corrupt, backwards, and racist foreign and national security policy that has caused death and trauma across the globe while lining the pockets of war profiteers.
In recent days, the Global War on Terror that has spanned four U.S. administrations has once again led to predictable devastation and displacement, this time for the Afghan people.
I was deployed to Afghanistan. Like so many Afghanistan war survivors and veterans, I know we needed to end this war a long time ago. Wars are easy to start, but they’re incredibly hard to end.
We need to end this war — but we also need to end this entire era of U.S. violence and supremacy and greed. When we see our elected leaders fail to deliver care to working families at home, and when we see them destroy the lives of working families abroad, we are looking at the same pattern.
We need to come together to build a new future where we center human rights and our planet above profit and corruption.
That starts with acting to care for the refugees that our war in Afghanistan has created, and reckoning with the moral injury current actions are having on active duty service members and veterans, who are at an increased risk of suicide.
Each one of our voices matter in this moment. Our actions can make a difference too. Here are some ways to help:
Now is the time to live our values. That means urging President Biden and Congress to ensure safe evacuation, aid to Afghan citizens, and account for the damage done by the Global War on Terror once and for all. Click here to send an email to your members of Congress and urge them to do all they can to help the Afghan people.
If you are a survivor of war, an active duty service member, a veteran, or have loved ones who are affected by the events of recent days, you are not alone. Click here for a list of resources to find the support you need, or sign up here to join Vets for the People, our political home within WFP for the veteran and military community.
People who are evacuating from Afghanistan may soon be arriving in the United States in communities in Virginia, Wisconsin, and Texas. If you want to volunteer for airport pickup, help with housing setups, or provide meals for Afghans, click here to learn how.
Ending the wars is about who we want to be. We can shift resources away from endless wars, mass incarceration, and agencies that separate families. We can shift them into schools, housing, jobs and care that will lift up all people — especially Black and brown people, immigrants, and Indigenous people. But we can’t do it until we change the nature of power in America. Add your name to the WFP People’s Charter here to help us vote out the war profiteers and nativists and be a part of what we are building together.
We have a moral obligation to do all we can in this moment, and in the weeks and months ahead, to organize for the kind of country and world we all want to live in.
In solidarity,
Pam Campos-Palma
