Climate change is an existential threat to our lives, our planet, and our future. Here in Colorado, as a state that prides itself in its clean water and public lands, we feel the effects of climate change harder through devastating floods and fires.

In this Colorado Conversations virtual town hall, we bring together community members, experts, and elected officials to focus on the actions we must take and continue to take to combat climate change, and protect our water and environment.

Welcome Joselyn!

Image

We’re so excited to welcome Joselyn Jackson to the CDP as our new administrative assistant! Joselyn has a background in early childhood education, customer service, and entrepreneurship. She’s also currently working part-time as a Scentsy consultant and worked as a preschool teacher. In middle school/high school, Joselyn learned under our executive director Halisi Vinson at the Urban Syndicate, a nonprofit dedicated to teaching at-risk youth entrepreneurship, media production, & success skills. There, Joselyn learned about a number of skills and topics, including politics, investment, video production, and so much more.

Joselyn is really excited to join the Colorado Democratic Party to be more involved in the political process, to meet and connect with activists and elected officials, and to help build a better future for her, her kids, and her community. Joselyn is a proud graduate of George Washington high school in Denver, and currently lives in Aurora with her three young kids.

States boost earned income tax credits for pandemic relief

CNBC

A growing number of states have leveraged funds from the American Rescue Plan to add or improve earned income tax credits for families most affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

The earned income tax credit, known as EITC, provides low- to moderate-income families with a write-off. To qualify, taxpayers must have earned income, which is wages and payments other than investments.

...

Ten states — Colorado, Connecticut, Indiana, Maryland, Missouri, New Jersey, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Oregon and Washington — have passed bills to improve EITCs, and there is pending legislation in Delaware and the District of Columbia.

Remember -- Colorado Republicans like Lauren Boebert, Ken Buck, and Doug Lamborn all voted 'No' to helping Colorado families.

Meanwhile, all of Colorado's Democratic members of the Congressional delegation voted 'Yes'!

But how else does the American Rescue Plan specifically help Coloradans, you ask? Click the link to find out!

Support for Democratic School Board Candidates

As an initiative, Democratic Education Initiative of the Colorado Democratic Party (CoDEI) has played a leadership role in the examination and discussion of important education policy issues for twenty years! We also serve as a resource for candidates running for education positions or on education issues.

The CoDEI is asking all county party chairs and members of the State Central Committee to help us identify Democrats who are running for school boards this year.  The CoDEI is happy to advise, coach, and support these candidates.  The sooner we know who is running – or who is thinking of running – the sooner we can be of assistance. Please email us at [email protected] with names and contact information of any Democrat you know is a candidate or is contemplating becoming one for their local school board.

Additionally, each odd-numbered year, the CoDEI holds an event in late August to give Democratic candidates for school boards around the state an opportunity to speak to fellow Democrats. This year, the event will take place via Zoom on Friday, August 20 from 1:30-3:30.

You can register via Mobilize: https://www.mobilize.us/democraticeducationinitiative/event/389078/

Colorado governor voids an 1864 order to kill Native Americans

Associated Press

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis on Tuesday rescinded a 19th century proclamation that called for citizens to kill Native Americans and take their property, in a move to atone for what he called “sins of the past.”

The 1864 order by Colorado’s second territorial governor, John Evans, eventually led to the Sand Creek massacre, one of Colorado’s darkest and most fraught historic moments. The brutal assault left more than 200 Arapaho and Cheyenne people — mostly women, children and older people — dead.

Volunteer of the Week

Image

Meet Freddie Jacquez, a longtime fighter for workers' rights, Democratic beliefs, and access to voting for the Latino community. Based out of the San Luis Valley, Freddie actually joined us for our Colorado Conversations virtual town hall focusing on racial justice (click here to check it out if you missed it!) and in fact, ever the musician, performed a song from the Chicano labor movement for the attendees.

A local author devoted a chapter to Freddie, and did a deep dive into his background and why he devotes his time to fighting for Democratic causes. Here's an excerpt:

The San Luis Valley is also one of the economically poorest rural communities in Colorado. As a rural community, it faces the same types of challenges and needs as any other Colorado community. However, it possesses fewer resources to meet those needs/challenges. Freddie says there is a relatively high rate of diabetes among its citizens, creating a need to educate people about the lifestyle changes that can prevent diabetes. Like the rest of the country, it also has its share of drug-related problems. More healthcare providers, including mental health professionals, are badly needed—except it can be tough recruiting professionals to rural communities. Salaries are generally lower and there aren’t the amenities that bigger communities offer.

But the Valley has its strengths as well. Among them is its educational system. Citing Adams State College as an example (now Adams State University), Freddie says it made a huge difference in his life. When he started college, Freddie encountered “big classrooms … with kids from all over the place.” His collegiate education provided the opportunity to learn from and with people who were not just local, but who came from different places and with “different mindsets, different philosophies.” Having access to an institution of higher learning gave “kids hope and the opportunity to accomplish” more than they might otherwise have including Freddie. The College Assistance Migrant Program helped make Freddie’s college education possible.
