Friend,
I’ve always held that nobody should operate above the law – particularly those sworn to serve and uphold it. That conviction has only grown stronger over the past year, as demonstrated by the profound racial reckoning across Minnesota and our nation prompted by the tragic murder of George Floyd in 2020.
As Minnesota’s chief law enforcement officer, restoring trust between law enforcement and the communities we serve is one of my highest priorities. Our latest step toward accountability is our first statewide program examining possible wrongful convictions, which was rolled out last week.
But we need to go further – we need to investigate and demand accountability for damage done before cases head to trial. We can do this if we pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, passed by the U.S. House but has stalled in the Senate.
We need to name and bring an end to harm inflicted in-custody – including ending dangerous practices like chokeholds and carotid holds.
We need to establish national standards for the use of force – and train and empower police officers to de-escalate.
We need to make it easier for principled officers to hold their colleagues accountable.
And we need to end qualified immunity for law enforcement.
We don’t want any more community members dying at the hands of law enforcement. We don’t want any more law enforcement members having to face criminal charges. We don’t want any more communities torn apart.
As a person who has led the prosecution against law enforcement officials who needed to be held accountable, I know that verdicts are important, but don’t represent the systemic change we desperately require.
