Team,
In the middle of an alarming Covid surge in Texas, Governor Greg Abbott attended an indoor, maskless political event this past Sunday with hundreds of people—and now he has unfortunately contracted Covid.
Of course, we wish the governor a speedy recovery. Abbott has access to great health care—he’s already received a third booster shot and is on an antibody treatment not available to most of the 12,000 Texans currently hospitalized with the virus.
This virus is dangerous, and every Texan should be vigilant in taking precautions. That’s why it’s height of hypocrisy for Abbott to continue blocking schools from requiring masks while he gathers for Republican super-spreader events.
We must keep up the pressure now.
Parents across Texas are speaking up to demand our leaders protect the health of their children. Four school systems have already shut down due to Covid outbreaks. ICU beds are filling up across the state. And more than 12,000 Texans are hospitalized with this virus.
Instead of showing leadership, Republican lawmakers are blocking schools from requiring masks. They’re putting their own GOP primary politics before the health of our students and teachers. Texas deserves better.
Thanks so much,
Sawyer Hackett
