Dear John,
Women with heart disease are more at risk for certain illnesses, which is why prevention through immunization is important. Vaccines can prevent illnesses such as pneumococcal and shingles, as well as COVID-19.
Unfortunately, barriers such as lack of adequate information about recommended vaccines and financial hurdles lead to low vaccinations rates, particularly for people of color. While policies have ensured that people have access to the COVID-19 vaccine, they must go further to invest in a comprehensive vaccine strategy that helps prevent illnesses that adversely impact people with chronic conditions.
Ask your member of Congress to remove barriers to vaccines!
The Protecting Seniors Through Immunization Act is a bipartisan bill that would address those barriers - eliminating the out-of-pocket costs for vaccines covered under Medicare Part D. Currently, copayments apply to vaccines covered under Medicare Part D (e.g. Tdap, shingles) but not vaccines under Part B (e.g. flu, pneumococcal), which are available with no cost to the beneficiary. The bill will also improve education about recommended vaccines for Medicare beneficiaries.
